Why are you nominating for the Board?

My involvement in autistic self-advocacy has been multifaceted and deeply meaningful. I have actively participated in community groups that focus on raising awareness about the rights and needs of autistic individuals, engaging in discussions that promote understanding and acceptance. This includes attending workshops and events that provide platforms for autistic voices to share their experiences and advocate for change.

I have developed advocacy materials that address intersectional injustices within my community and actively use my voice to raise awareness across Australia. Additionally, I have collaborated with local organizations to create resources that empower autistic individuals to navigate various aspects of life, from education to employment. By working alongside fellow advocates, I have helped to foster environments where autistic people can express themselves freely and have their perspectives valued. This work has reinforced my belief in the importance of self-advocacy, and I am committed to continuing to support initiatives that uplift and empower the autistic community.

What experience on and contributions to other boards and committees have you had?

My lack of involvement with committees or boards has often highlighted the power imbalances and exclusion that exist in political engagement. Without these formal platforms, I have experienced firsthand how marginalized voices can be overlooked. This absence has reinforced my reliance on grassroots activism, as I believe it is essential to authentically voice the issues faced by oppressed individuals. By advocating from the ground up, I aim to ensure that the concerns and needs of our community are heard and addressed in meaningful ways.

What are your areas of expertise?

My areas of expertise lie in advocacy and research, particularly in addressing policies that affect marginalized communities. I am a grassroots activist for the autism community, dedicated to amplifying the voices and experiences of autistic individuals. I am skilled at analyzing existing policies to identify gaps and areas for improvement, ensuring that the perspectives of those impacted are included in the conversation. My experience in research complements this work, as I strive to gather data and evidence that supports effective advocacy efforts.

I view media involvement as a crucial tool for amplifying advocacy and research. By leveraging various media platforms, I can raise awareness about important issues, challenge misconceptions, and promote understanding within the broader community. This dual approach—combining rigorous research with strategic media engagement—serves as a powerful platform for advocacy.

In my advocacy work, I actively contact those in systems of power to bring their attention to the experiences and needs of the “little people.” This effort aims to bridge the gap between decision-makers and the communities they serve, ensuring that policies are informed by real-life experiences and challenges. I believe that every injustice and oppression in our community stems from the economic exclusion of our population from rights and employment opportunities. This marginalization contributes to alarmingly high suicide rates among autistic individuals, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change.

The strengths of an effective advocate include strong communication skills, empathy, and the ability to build coalitions. An advocate must be able to articulate complex issues clearly and persuasively, fostering understanding and support among diverse audiences. Empathy allows advocates to connect with those they represent, ensuring their work is grounded in the lived experiences of individuals. Additionally, the ability to collaborate and build relationships with various stakeholders is essential for driving meaningful change and achieving positive outcomes. Together, these strengths empower advocates to make a lasting impact in their communities.
